It’s official we have a sorcerer supreme, Marvel have confirmed Benedict Cumberbatch the man also known as Sherlock Holmes, Khan and more recently Smaug is now Doctor Strange.
Marvel Entertainment have confirmed the British actor has signed on the dotted line with the film now on time to be ready for it’s Summer 2016 release date. The recent rumours have been rife for a while , basically since the Summers Comic-con when things where unofficially announced and when you look at the characters Cumberbatch has played Doctor Strange would fit perfectly into his portfolio. If anything there may have been more of a backlash than cheer if he hadn’t got it but now everything is official.
Here’s the official blurb from Marvel “The film, directed by Scott Derrickson(Sinister) with Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.”
Like thousands of people worldwide Cumberbatch’s name was the first name the crepted into our minds leaves you asking if Marvel’s initial choice Joaquin Phoenix would we be looking at an entirely different type of Doc? Cumberbatch’s work speaks for itself especially this year, he’s such a versatile actor and his work in The Imitation Game Marvel have gotten their hands on a fine actor, soon to be Oscar winning one. Cumberbatch has the ability to make any character likable, or simply sympathetic to the viewer whilst keeping that sense of mystery about them which is good so you can expect the unexpected. He simply delivers intensity which we want!
Marvel producer Kevin Feige is over the moon with the choice “Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
It’s a while off before the actor will start shooting Doctor Strange as 2015 he will have a stint back on the theatre stage in London’s Barbican theatre, so expect Winter 2015 before production starts. So can we expect the Doc to make an cameo in one of the Marvel Phase 2 films possibly in a end credits scene? Don’t rule it out especially with the likes of Avengers: Age Of Ultron about to make some extra shoots and will the rumour of Daniel Bruhl’s character in Captain America: Civil War be the villain in this film?
Doctor Strange will open in the UK on 28 October 2016, and the USA on 4 November 2016.
