Benedict Cumberbatch Confirms No Doctor Strange In “Avengers: Doomsday” but will return for “Secret Wars”

Benedict Cumberbatch as a wizard in Marvel

Fans are feverish awaiting the latest Avengers film after the announcement last year that Robert Downey Jnr was returning to the franchise, this time in the guise of supervillain Doctor Doom/Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, but one old friend – namely Doctor Strange – won’t be facing off against him. At least, not yet…

In a new interview with Variety ahead of his new film The Thing With Feathers premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in the next week or so, Cumberbatch was asked about his future in Marvel and with Doctor Strange and confirmed while plans are in place, they don’t include a Sorcerer Supreme in the next Avengers film, but he will be back for its follow-up.

โ€œIs that a spoiler?… โ€œFuck it!โ€ he told the Hollywood Trade paper. He says that after Jonathan Majors’ firing from his role as Kang The Conqueror, plans changed and that โ€œthe character not aligning with this part of the story” was the reasoning behind his absence. But, the star does say for the next film, Avengers: Secret Wars he is โ€œin a lotโ€ of it.

โ€œHeโ€™s quite central to where things might go,โ€ Cumberbatch says whilst also talking about discussions with Marvel about a third solo Doctor Strange film, saying:

โ€œThey are very open to discussing where we go next… Who do you want to write and direct the next one? What part of the comic lore do you want to explore so that Strange can keep evolving? Heโ€™s a very rich character to play. Heโ€™s a complex, contradictory, troubled human whoโ€™s got these extraordinary abilities, so thereโ€™s potent stuff to mess about with.โ€
Avengers: Doomsday is set for release on May 1st, 2026.
