Bautista Rumoured To Be Next Kratos For God Of War Adaptation

Dave Bautista (Guardians Of The Galaxy) is reportedly in talks to step into Amazon Prime‘s upcoming God of War series, taking over the role of Kratos from the injured Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy), according to Variety.

The recasting follows Hurst suffering a torn bicep while already shooting the series, an injury reportedly serious enough to push his return to production into 2027. This left Amazon and producing studio Sony little choice but to recast the role in order to keep things on schedule. Production is hoping to resume later this year. The series has a two-season order and picks up the story from the two most recent games, following Kratos as he raises his ten-year-old son Atreus while contending with the gods of the Norse pantheon. Per the official logline: ‘Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.’

Callum Vinson remains attached as Atreus. He’s joined by Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Ronald D. Moore is writing, exec producing and showrunning through his Tall Ship Productions banner, with Frederick E.O. Toye directing the first two episodes. Maril Davis (also of Tall Ship) executive produces alongside Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee and Brad Van Arragon, while Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers.

Bautista first broke into the mainstream as Batista in WWE before winning over wider audiences as Drax across the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Since then, he’s appeared in the first two Dune films as well as a run of Amazon projects, including My Spy and The Wrecking Crew. Whether this casting is confirmed remains to be seen, and so does how he’ll fit the role. On paper he certainly looks the part, but it’ll take actual footage to know for sure.
