If you are going to solve a murder no one better than to have Edgar Allen Poe on your side. In December Christian Bale will require the help of a young Poe in The Pale Blue Eye. Netflix have unveiled the Teaser Trailer that asks ‘who is the killer‘?

The film marks the third collaboration Bale has had with filmmaker Scott Cooper. The pair have also worked on Out Of The Furnace and Hostiles now a fictionalised account of the young writers Army cadet days. This will also be the second film set around the same period, the other being The Raven’s Hollow (on Shudder).

The film is in West Point, 1830. A world-weary detective (Bale) is hired to discreetly investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case . A young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling).

The trailer just run at 1 minute long and quickly sets the tone. This will be a dark foreboding tale…

West Point, 1830. In the early hours of a grey winter morning, a cadet is found dead. But after the body arrives at the morgue, tragedy becomes savagery when it’s discovered that the young man’s heart has been skillfully removed. Fearing irreparable damage to the fledgling military academy, its leaders turn to a local detective, Augustus Landor (Christian Bale), to solve the murder. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, Landor enlists the help of one of their own to pursue the case, an eccentric cadet with a disdain for the rigors of the military and a penchant for poetry — a young man named Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling). Based on the novel by Louis Bayard.

The film’s supporting cast, includes Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones, Harry Lawtey, Simon McBurney, Hadley Robinson, Timothy Spall, Joey Brooks, Brennan Cook, Gideon Glick, Fred Hechinger, Matt Helm, Jack Irving, Steven Maier, Charlie Tahan and Robert Duvall.

The Pale Blue Eye will get a limited UK and Irish cinema release on 23rd December. Then on 6th January 2023.
