Arrow Will Be ‘Gruesome’ And ‘Disturbing’ In September

The last strands of Summer will be bidding farewell in September. Over at the cult streaming service ARROW next month, it will be ‘gruesome’ and ‘disturbing’. A mix of gritty Japanese crime drama, disturbing horror, sci-fi delirium plus both Adam Green and Ovidio G. Assonitis selects.

Next month exclusively on ARROW in the UK, Vampire Clay, an outrageously entertaining horror film about clay bloodsuckers running amok at an art school. The debut feature film by special effects wizard Sôichi Umezawa, the film that Dread Central calls ‘one bonkers Japanese body horror flick’, is packed with gloriously gory moments and superb practical effects. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a clay vampire in action!

Also next month, The Threat, a gritty crime drama in the vein of Kurosawa’s High and Low, set against the backdrop of a rapidly modernising Japan that has left many of its citizens behind, starring Rentarō Mikuni (Fugitive from the Past, Vengeance is Mine) and Masumi Harukawa (Intentions of Murder) as a couple whose privileged existence threatens to unravel in a blink of an eye. This little-seen early masterpiece from Kinji Fukasaku, the future director of Battles Without Honour, Humanity and Battle Royale, is presented in a stunning new transfer.

The channel continues to show the very best in offbeat and original short films, including Connie, written and directed by Cat Davies, and starring Catrin Stewart (Dr Who), who won the Best Actress Award at the Horrorhound Festival, for her role as a struggling stand-up who finds success when she adds a puppet to her routine – but there’s a price to pay. With nods to Ealing horror classic Dead of Night, and Anthony Hopkins chiller Magic, this shivery short has plenty of new tricks up its sleeve. Gottle o’ fear!

Finally in September, Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia’s exhilarating debut feature Acción Mutante, a violent sci-fi black comedy. Produced by legendary provocateur Pedro Almodóvar, the film is set in a post-apocalyptic world where attractive people hold all the power and a terrorist group, who see themselves as mutants, take arms to rid the world of their superficial oppressors.

Seasons in September include:
