Studiocanal UK have released the First UK Trailer for Pablo Larrain‘s Maria starring Angelia Jolie as legendary Oprea Singer Maria Callas.
The Chilean filmmaker does seem to like making films about women in anguish or torment. His films Jackie and Spencer showcase this theme, not sure if it’s deliberate or simple he’s interested in the life story of both.
Who was Maria Callas? She was an American Greek soprano considered by many as the greatest female Oprea singer ever. She was certainly one of the most iconic singers who mastered the works from 19th century Italian Opera. Born in Athens and left for the U.S when she was 13 with her mother, it was also the year she started her musical education. Her debut in Oprea came when she was 18 singing Puccini’s Tosca in Athens. Her relationship with her mother was fragile which fell apart altogether in 1950.
Maria will focus on the peroid of her life living in Paris in her final days in 1970s. Dying young at the age of 53 due to a heart attack. This period shows a legend struggling with life and career.
Early reviews for this one have been very good and looking at the January release this will probably be one of the contenders in the upcoming awards season.
From acclaimed director Pablo Larraín (Spencer, Jackie), MARIA, will tell the tumultuous, beautiful, and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest female opera singer, relived, and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.
The film also stars Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Valeria Golino. Maria will be in UK and Irish cinemas from 10th January 2025. The film will make it’s UK premiere at BFI London Film Festival in London in October.
