Andy Weir adaptation Project Hail Mary will be star Ryan Gosling’s longest film

A recent report from Yosemite cinema has revealed that the soon-to-be-released sci-fi film Project Hail Mary is set to be Ryan Gosling’s longest-running film. 

The film is set to have a total runtime of 2 hours and 46 minutes, now the longest Ryan Gosling film. Its runtime has meant it’s taken that title from 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 by three minutes, which saw Gosling spend its length as Officer K in his discovery of a secret which threatens to run his cybernetic society off its course. Blade Runner 2049 was a sequel to the original classic Blade Runner, which was released in 1982 and was based on the 1961 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick.

Project Hail Mary is another science fiction book adaptation, written for the screen by Drew Goddard, who adapts Andy Weir’s 2021 book of the same title. Gosling takes the role of science teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up in a space shift with his memory blank. He soon pieces together the startling fact that he must work on the mission of discovering why the sun is dying, meaning the fate of the planet rests on his knowledge and action.

During his mission, Grace forms an unlikely bond with an extraterrestrial being, and the two begin to work together to prevent the looming possibility of Earth’s extinction. 

Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce and Milana Vayntrub are also set to appear in the Weir adaptation, with directing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller sharing the director’s chair. The two previously worked on the Jump Street films, released in 2012 and 2014, and were initially set to direct Hans: A Solo Story in 2018 before being fired and replaced by Ron Howard. 

Previous well-known adaptations of Weir’s work include Ridley Scott’s 2015 film The Martian, based on his 2011 novel, starring Matt Damon as mechanical engineer Dr Mark Watney. That cinematic adaptation, which ran for 2 hours and 21 minutes, went on to be considered one of 2015’s greatest features.

Project Hail Mary is scheduled for release on 20th March this year.
