Adam Scott in Hokum trailer

The latest trailer for Hokum has arrived, teasing an unsettling new folk horror from filmmaker Damian McCarthy.

Known for the eerie cult favourites Caveat and Oddity, McCarthy returns with what appears to be his most ambitious project yet. The film stars Adam Scott as Ohm Bauman, a reclusive novelist who travels to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes. What begins as a quiet and reflective trip soon spirals into something far more disturbing.

During his stay, the hotel staff began telling Ohm stories about a witch said to haunt the building’s honeymoon suite. At first, the tales seem like little more than local folklore, but the atmosphere quickly shifts as strange events begin to unfold around him.

As the trailer suggests, those stories gradually take hold of Ohm’s mind. Unsettling visions, eerie encounters and a mysterious disappearance slowly pull him into a dark mystery connected to both the inn’s history and his own past. The footage hints at a creeping sense of dread, with ritualistic imagery, unsettling masks and shadowy figures suggesting a supernatural presence lurking within the isolated location.

Alongside Severance star Scott, the film features performances from Peter Coonan, David Wilmot, Florence Ordesh, Will O’Connell and Michael Patric. Shot on location in rural Ireland, the remote setting plays a central role in shaping the film’s atmosphere, amplifying the sense of isolation and unease that builds throughout the trailer.

Continuing McCarthy’s exploration of psychological and supernatural horror, Hokum looks set to deliver another slow-burning nightmare that blurs the line between folklore, memory and fear.

Hokum is released in UK cinemas by Black Bear Pics on May 1st.
