A day after saying goodbye to her daughter Carrie Fisher who died, Debbie Reynolds has died herself aged 84. After saying she wanted to be with her daughter, the Oscar-nominated singer-actress was rushed to Cedars-Sinai hospital after suffering a stroke.
Carrie Fisher herself before her own death commented at her mother’s frailty and health, both are now together dying on Wednesday.
“She’s now with Carrie and we’re all heartbroken,” her son Todd Fisher said from the hospital.
Born Mary Frances Reynolds in 1932, she was raised in Texas before moving to California and Burbank when she was a teen.Thanks to winning Miss Burbank Beauty contest seen her winning a contract at the nearby Warner Bros. Studios with Jack Warner giving her the name of ‘Debbie’.
Her first appearance on the big was only a walk-on part in the 1948 movie ‘June Bride’, however, in 1950 she got her first speaking role in ‘The Daughter Of Rosie O’Grady‘.
It was the 1950’s Debbie Reynolds made her name as one of the decades leading ladies in many musicals and comedies with the classic Singin’ In The Rain. She was only 19 and when you star next to Gene Kelly your career has certainly kicked off.
In 1964 for The Unsinkable Of Molly Brown, Reynolds would receive a Best actress for the Titanic based musical.
The 1960’s became a barren period for her in acting she moved towards more Television later into Broadway. It was 1973 in musical Irene (Carrie Fisher’s official debut), following that with Debbie and stage version of Annie Get Your Gun. She did return to Unsinkable Molly Brown and Irene on the stage to once again in a one-woman show in London’s West End with Debbie Reynolds: Alive And Fabulous.
In 1973 she did return to cinema playing the voice of the spider in the animated movie Charlotte’s Web. After her short-lived show The Debbie Reynolds Show, she would star in Roseanne, Perry Mason, The Golden Girls and an Emmy Winning role in Will And Grace, as Bobbi’s Mother.
She was married three times, the first time in 1955 with singer Eddie Fisher whom she had 2 children with Carrie and Todd. She did go through a period where she wouldn’t speak to her daughter with Shirley Mclaine portraying her in Carrie Fisher’s Postcards From The Edge. The pair later embraced each other with Carrie presenting her Mother lifetime achievement award from Screen Actors Guild.
