Amazon MGM Studios Getting Closer To New James Bond
The list of potential new 007's has been whittled down to "5-7".
A name for the next James Bond is yet to be confirmed, but speculation never stops, and we may be one step closer to the truth. An exclusive from Deadlineย tells that the higher-ups of the film and critically acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve are bringing talent into a new cycle of auditions for our iconic spy lead. This next round is set to take place in August, but beyond that, the details remain scarce.
One source expects the producers to bring forward a large number of actors for the test, while others suggest around 5-7 to take over from Daniel Craig, who departed in 2021’s No Time To Die.
Amazon MGM studios acquired this project last year, and before even looking at casting, have assembled a stellar creative team to bring the Bond legacy into a brand new light – before Villeneuve, producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman were brought onto the project, and casting director Nina Gold closed a deal to join earlier this year. It looks as though Gold has begun her search rapidly, with sources saying she has been in conversation for the past few weeks, working to bring this vision to life.
Playing James Bond is a title that is not easily claimed, and there is potential for this to turn into a long-term career trajectory. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but it is to be said that with Amazon MGM Studios taking over, there is a feasible opportunity to expand the franchise into the future across both cinema and streaming. If successful, the next 007 could be taking on a series of films or potential projects – meaning this casting choice holds an incredible amount of weight.
Though no names have been confirmed, the public has begun sparking debate about prominent actors who would fit the role. Variety reported in May that Sunset Boulevard star Tom Francis auditioned for the role, but whether he is on the speed dial for the next round is uncertain. Other circulating names include Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, and previous front-runners Idris Elba and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Following this timeline, we can expect production to begin sometime in 2027, meaning we are still a way out from a Bond epic hitting the big screen. Still, with updates and changes being reported every day, the anticipation only grows for how a new team will manage to reach a very high bar.
