He may be out running WICKED in The Maze Runner movies and survive an oil rig disaster in Deepwater Horizon, now Dylan O’Brien will be a patriotic killer in American Assassin. This Autumn the ‘Grievers’ will be replaced by terrorists as the first Vince Flynn novel based on his Mitch Rapp characters comes to the big screen. As O’Brien attempts to the save the world from annihilation from World War 3, check out the first UK Trailer sent to us courtesy of Lionsgate Films…
Whether we can say this is planned or coincidental the timing for this seems right for this movie with the relevance of our little planet and brink of World War 3 becoming a reality. This sounds like it’s been picked right out of the 1990’s ala Scott Adkins ironically just happens to be in this one too! He helps ‘find’ that well known Burger chain with the big M, Michael Keaton is now finding the assassins of the future like Mitch. But this September will be ‘Lovin’ It’?
American Assassin follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair are then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.
Whilst the name of this movie might make you think this will be some sort of 1990s all out action thriller throwback, it actually does well to push the political side of things. Pushing Rapp into working on his training to be a strong CIA Operative rather than ‘give him a gun and let him seek his revenge on his Girlfriend’s killers‘. The action will be there, but how well Rapp will in combat remains to be seen, however, Dylan O’Brien does have the capability to be an action star.
American Assassin is directed by Michael Cuesta (Kill The Messenger) and will arrive in the UK on 15th September.
