Oscars - academy awards

The nominations for the 87th Academy Awards were announced today with the main nominations presented by Chris Pine and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, and the more technical nominations presented by J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuarón.

Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Birdman are leading the way with nine nominations apiece, with The Imitation Game not far behind with eight. The favourite going in, Boyhood, comes out with a disappointing six nominations, the same as Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper.

There weren’t too many surprises in the announcements, with the nominations for the big awards falling mainly as expected. One omission that did raise an eyebrow, was The Lego Movie from Best Animated Feature, although it did pick up a nod for Best SongSelma, a civil rights drama focusing on Martin Luther King, only went home with two nods, one being for Best Picture, despite being an early favourite.

The 87th Academy Awards will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, and will be held on the 22nd February.
