Give someone a pair of sicissors in a Lars Von Trier movie and you can expect something grostesque to happen, Mr controversy Lars Von Trier’s next project MELANCHOLIA has been picked by Magnolia Pictures for distribution in North America. According to IndieWire the actual deal with Magnolia has been done and dusted but the question many people are asking will it be ready for this spring in time to captulate the audiences at Cannes like his previous movie Antichrist did? So far its looking good.
Melancholia stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander SkarsgÄrd, Stellan SkarsgÄrd and Udo Kier and you could say this is the Danish directors most commerical work so far. The movie follows the story of two different women (Dunst & Gainsbourg) and their responses to the end of the world, the movie wont be as sadistically artful as Antichrist but still get those aftermath reactions of his previous works, so dont expect any happy endings as the director has said no more!
An actual promo was shown over the Weekend at the Berlin Film Festival and the Twitch boys were in attendence and this was there reaction:
In short, it is gorgeous â instantly recognizable as Von Trierâs work and very likely the most commercial iteration of his talent that we have seen yet. This in no way implies that he has dumbed things down, just that the wild transgressions of Antichrist are not present here â where they would be entirely inappropriate â and that the imagery is so beautiful that this is a film that you could clearly cut one hell of a trailer forâŠThough firmly grounded in reality there are a lot of special effects in this and they are integrated seamlessly, shots of static electricity arcing off skin and dead birds falling from the sky in super slow motion being particularly effective.
This is sound good very good, I have seen Antichrist and ill admit it I really enjoyed it his visual arthouse style may not be everyone’s cup of tea but when you watch week in week in week out mainstream movies which get to the point all the same, a little boring its good to refresh your visual pallette every once and a while. So expect explosive moments which will come believe it or not at the start of the movie and when you think about what movies sole purpose is, its to entertain and provoke reaction, Lars Von Trier certainly does that and if you want to lighten up a film festival like Cannes “The Best Director In The World” is the man to do that!
Melancholia has been pencilled for a 1st July 2011 UK release.
