It’s been nearly 30 years since audiences last saw Bill S. Preston (Alex Winter) and Ted Theodore Logan (Keanu Reeves) as they travelled through time to save themselves and save the future. Now they’re still married to the beautiful princesses, Elizabeth (Erinn Hayes) and Joanna (Jayma Mayes) and they’re fathers to their equally
beautiful, but also equally unambitious daughters, Thea (Samara Weaving) and Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine).
The trouble is that they still haven’t managed to write that song that was foretold to them by Rufus that would change the world. They’ve tried everything they could think of and every combination of music (whether it works or not) but now they’re out of options. Worse still, Rufus’ daughter, Kelly (Kristen Schaal) has come from the future to tell them that if they don’t write that song then not only is the future at stake – but so is the fabric of reality.
Bill & Ted Face the Music is the highly anticipated sequel to the franchise that kickstarted the careers of its stars. Ever since Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, talks of a third movie was desperately wanted, needed by the fans but like dust in the wind, the sequel seemed to be lost in time forever. However, over the past few years word of Bill &
Ted’s most triumphant return made a lot of fans excited. Although for some they’d have to believe it before they saw it.
Thankfully, Bill & Ted Face the Music came at what could have possibly been the most perfect time and it came just when we all needed a bit of hope for our future. Winter and Reeves fit back into their sophomore characters like they’d never left them and their chemistry is as strong as ever. The casting of their daughters is also a master stroke as both Weaving and Lundy-Paine play their roles like mini versions of the titular duo, with the latter doing a spot-on imitation of her on screen father. Bill & Ted Face the Music isn’t perfect, it may not entirely match the humour and charm of the originals, but it mixes the simplicity of Excellent Adventure with the weirdness of Bogus Journey to give life long fans a satisfying conclusion.
