Shazam

Warner Bros’ Pictures has released the first Trailer for DC Shazam!direct from San Diego Comic-Con. David F. Sandberg‘s Superhero comedy hopes to bring a lighter side to DCEU. A universe more at home with dark and gritty storylines. Will it bring a fun side to the universe?

The film looks to promise a more family-centric side that’s firmly set in the current universe. Some have described this film as if Superman met Tom Hanks ‘Big’. When orphaned Billy Batson (Asher Angel) world collides with Shazam! (played by Zachary Levi). This gives the boy the power of giving the film a childlike tone whilst giving a grown up one in the action scenes.

There’s something I like about this but also don’t like. I can’t pinpoint what, possibly as I’m a stranger to this character. However, you can mix superhero sub-genre with any other genre and get some great unexpected results. Hopefully, this one will do that…

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batsonโ€™s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one wordโ€”SHAZAM!โ€”this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still, a kid at heartโ€”inside a ripped, godlike bodyโ€”Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But heโ€™ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

The film stars Djimon Hounsou, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, and Marta Milans.

Shazam! will arrive in the UK and Ireland from 5th April 2019 (the USA also 5th April 2019).
