We all know Rolland Emmerich likes to destroy Earth in many different ways from Alien Invasions to Mayan Prophecies but now his attention turns to destroying England’s great bard William Shakespeare in the conspiracy theory historical drama ANONYMOUS.
Don’t despair Emmerich fans you will see some explosions in the shape of cannons in a CGI created England in a era of political turmoil of the monarchy in the backdrop of the controversial theory that William Shakespeare did not write his great works but written by the 17th Earl of Oxford, Edward de Vere played by Rhys Ifans . We do experience a little more of the movies plot and that Radiohead song again which I actually like (reminds me of Vanilla Sky starring Tom Cruise)but Im a little unsure if it mixes well with a movie set in several hundred years earlier. The movie actually boasts quite a good cast of Rhys Ifans, Xavier Samuel, Jamie Campbell Bower, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Vanessa Redgrave, Derek Jacobi, Rafe Spall, Edward Hogg, and despite this you still feel this movie is going to be over the top silliness you expect from Emmerich.
ANONYMOUS is set for its world premier at next month’s Toronto Film Festival with the movie arriving on British&Irish shores October 28th which was originally September 30th which the release date for USA now.
Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.
