The Rocky Horror Picture Show Getting A 50th Anniversary 4K Restoration

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, cult classic movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be receiving a new 4K Ultra HD restoration, which will make its way to US cinemas later this year (via Deadline).
The Walt Disney Studios Restoration team have spent 10 months restoring the movie, including a precise digital scan and preservation process that ensures every frame of the film is presented with “unprecedented clarity and vibrancy”, according to the team. This restoration will also have a newly mixed Dolby Atmos audio track. Kevin Schaeffer, Disney’s Director of Restoration and Library Management, said, “It’s a privilege to help preserve the legacy of a film that has meant so much to so many.”
Schaeffer continued, “Bringing The Rocky Horror Picture Show to life in 4K allows us to honour its bold, genre-defying spirit and ensure that audiences – both longtime fans and first-time viewers – can experience it as it was originally intended, with stunning picture and sound.”
Released in 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, based on the stage show by Richard O’Brien, came from a screenplay written by both O’Brien and director Jim Sharman. The movie stars the likes of Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Meat Loaf and O’Brien himself.
Lou Adler, producer of the movie, said in a statement, “When The Rocky Horror Picture Show was first released, no one thought it would be around very long, let alone 50 years. What began as a small, rebellious project has become a global celebration of individuality, community, and creative freedom. This anniversary is a tribute to the fans who kept it alive and kicking all these years.”
There is no word yet on when The Rocky Horror Picture Show will get a UK release.
