Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars Trilogy Will Reportedly Continue The Skywalker Saga

Head of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed (via Deadline) Simon Kinberg’s upcoming Star Wars trilogy will directly follow the legendary Skywalker Saga. The films are a high priority for Lucasfilm, with Kennedy adding that they were “absolutely rolling fast and furiously” on Kinberg’s projects.
Kinberg, of Dark Phoenix fame, was attached to write and direct a new Star Wars trilogy back in November. The filmmaker has also worked on Star Wars: Rebels in various roles, including executive producer and writer. Kennedy noted Kinberg’s return to the franchise as “a really wonderful collaborative experience.”
Fans will no doubt be excited for the Skywalker Saga (the main series of Star Wars films from Episode 1 to 9) to continue, with Kennedy confirming Kinberg’s trilogy as “the new saga that moves us into the future.” However, whether the films will be a direct continuation is disputed.
Although some outlets have claimed Kinberg’s trilogy as Episode 10, 11, and 12, others have speculated the films to be a spin-off series, akin to James Mangold and Taika Waititi’s contributions to the franchise. What is clear, however, is that Kinberg’s trilogy exists beyond Episode 9, and will continue the story from there.
Where this will take the franchise remains to be seen, although fans may not have to wait long for an update. Kennedy has stated that the projects have “gone exceptionally well, and he’s literally going to script as we speak. We’ll see something probably around June.”
This rapid progress will be a delight to fans, as it has been close to 6 years since the last Star Wars theatrical release. But with Kinberg hard at work, the next chapters may come sooner than we think.
