Conclave Tops Official Film Chart As Sales Surge 600% !

Conclave Ralph Fiennes stars

Conclave sees a 600% UK sales uplift week-on-week to reach Number 1 on the Official Film Chart for the first time, following the death of Pope Francis, according to Official Charts Company data.

The plot of the 2024 Edward Berger-directed political thriller, starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini, centres around the conclave, where cardinals gather to elect a new Pope, revealing hidden secrets and internal conflicts within the Church.

This week, Conclave surges to the Official Film Chart summit in its 17th week on chart, having previously peaked at Number 2 for three non-consecutive weeks.

The film’s home entertainment surge comes ahead of the upcoming papal conclave, set to begin at the Sistine Chapel, Vatican City on 7th May.

Martin Talbot, Chief Executive Officer, Official Charts (who compile the UK’s EST/VOD/physical sales data for films), says: “As the nation has been mourning the sad death of Pope Francis, it has clearly also been keen to understand the process of appointing his successor – the result being a big surge of sales of Conclave over the past week. The six-fold increase in digital and physical sales is extraordinary, making it a worthy Number 1 in the Official Film Chart.”

Elsewhere, Nick Love-directed British action blockbuster Marching Powder makes its Film Chart debut; new in at Number 9.

Starring Danny Dyer, Geoff Bell and Stephanie Leonidas, the adaptation of Rusty Young’s 2002 non-fiction novel chronicles a middle-aged Jack (Dyer) as he’s given six weeks to turn his life around after being arrested on drug charges.
