Sunday Short Theatre – Rew Day

rewDay

Doctor Pepper what’s the worst that can happen?” Life isn’t perfect we have good days some bad ones (or Dr Pepper ones I call them sometimes). Svilen Dimitrov‘s Rew Day sees a day of a man’s life is seen as on a videotape which is being rewound. When he wakes up in the morning he has no idea what lays ahead, enjoy our Sunday Shorty Theatre film of The Week…

If it wasn’t for The People’s Movies & Cinehouse Blogs as well as my voluntary job at Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT), my life would have been down a drain. With Rew Day I can connect with this haunting little animated film. As the message of the film we wake up everyday not knowingly know what each day has for us, in this one it’s the demise of our protagonist. With a macabre sense of dark humour we may laugh at him however this could happen to any of us. What makes this delightfully minimalist animation so powerful is the fact it does everything in reverse, leaves you asking what’s more scary knowing what fate lies ahead or taking each day as your last?

Rew Day isn’t a film that reveals everything at once, it invites you to slowly join our character on his downward spiral, slowly pacing but half way in, its all downhill. Around 90 seconds mark we do realise not all is well for the protagonist, the slow pace in a short film is something we would associate with a feature film, so hands up to Dimitrov for keeping the interest flowing  throughout.

We love the VHS style roll and nostalgic thumbs up to technology gone by and if your wondering why our main character is having bad luck and despair keep an eye out for the calendar. It’s give us a big clue Rew Day!
