Another week gone, another weekend on the horizon. If all you’re planning on a lazy weekend, or simply searching for something to watch tonight, we have combed Netflix to come up with some options for you.
New to Netflix – House of Cards, Season 3
Alongside Orange is the New Black, House of Cards is a Netflix-original production, that continues to be nominated for, and win awards. With Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright starring as the scheming Underwoods, and David Fincher serving as executive producer, House of Cards has some serious chops behind it. Spacey is particularly brilliant as the conniving Congressman Frank Underwood, who gradually plots his revenge on the people who have betrayed him, including the President of the United States. A gripping and enthralling watch, House of Cards is perfect if you are searching for the next great television series.
Shutter Island
Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio Shutter Island marks the fourth time that the actor and director had worked together (they later went on to make The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013, which incidentally is also on Netflix). Based on a mystery thriller novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane, Shutter Island sees US Marshall Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and his new partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) set out to solve the mystery of a woman who has disappeared from an insane asylum. There is intrigue and mystery at every turn, as Teddy struggles to make sense of the strange events that have taken place on Shutter Island. Although far from Scorsese’s best work, it is still sublimely crafted, and an atmospheric and thrilling watch. Be warned, there are twists and turns aplenty.
Bill Cunningham New York
A charming documentary, that focuses on the titular, veteran New York fashion photographer, Bill Cunningham is an unashamed, easy watch. Cunningham (80 at the time of the film), has been obsessively photographing fashion trends, both on the streets, and the catwalks of New York. The film follows Cunningham as he rides through the streets on his trusty Schwinn bicycle, stopping to snap an interesting outfit at a moment’s notice. Alongside interviews with fashion luminaries such as Anna Wintour, Bill Cunningham New York offers an insightful and enlightened look into the funny and charming photographer’s life. Perfect for a cosy Sunday afternoon watch.
Airplane
One of the most influential comedies of all time, Airplane is a parody of the influx of disaster films from the 1970s. Directed and written by Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, and David Zucker (who were also responsible for Police Squad and The Naked Gun films), Airplane is so chock full of puns, sight gags, and surreal stories, that if you didn’t like one, another one will come along in a minute to have you laughing again. In fact, researchers have found it is “the funniest film ever” with a  whopping 3 laughs per minute. The film follows ex-pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays), who of course, is afraid of flying, as he is forced to rescue a plane when the crew becomes ill. Immensely quotable,  once viewed, for the 1st or 100th time, you will begin to see Airplane! references in popular culture all over the place.
