John Woo Set To Remake His Classic The Killer For Peacock

Fans of Hong Kong Cinema will know John Woo‘s 1989 crime action thriller The Killer is considered one of the classics. It now looks like Woo will be set to remake the film for streaming channel Peacock in part of an exclusive deal with the channel.

The film will be one of three films all set to be made for Peacock set for a 2023 release. The films are part of deal with Universal Pictures with Shooting Stars with LeBron James and the other is Praise This. The Killer will be a reimaging/ English language version of the original.

The original starred Chow Yun Fat in titular role as an assassin on his last ever job. During that job he inadvertently blinds Club Singer Jennie (Sally Yeh) and is determined to pay for the treatment to restore her eyesight. However those who assigned him the job refuse to pay and he does have a determined cop Li Ying (Danny Lee) out to stop him. He does take on a new job whom Ying agrees to help.

John Woo has made several other action thrillers that would go onto influence the genre like 1990’s Hollywood. A Better Tomorrow, Hard Boiled are two of those films which saw Woo head to Tinsel Town himself making the likes of Hard Target (with Jean Claude Van Damme). Also Face/Off with Nicolas Cage and John Travolta who has recently said he would be open to a second film. Here’s a look at the Trailer for The Killer…

This is not the first time The Killer was due to be remade. A few years ago Lupita Nyong’o was set to star in a gender swapped version. This news broke back when the English actress was starring in US and Black Panther, leaving the project due to scheduling.

There is no word who may star and when in 2023 The Killer remake will be released. John Woo is currently working on Silent Night with Joel Kinnaman. Here in the UK and Ireland Peacock releases are released via Sky Peacock, there is no word just yet when they are released this will be the channel.
