Film Review – Blush (2019)

Squirming whilst laughing during multiple awkward moments throughout sets up a career defining performance by Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids, Date and Switch) best known as a situation comedic maestro, she significantly flexes her dramatic range in a dark wicked tale defining the joys of quirky independent cinema.

Seemingly lost in the suburbs and a woman with strict routines, Cathy (McLendon-Covey) can’t communicate with her teen daughter or husband, her community work and volunteering is somewhat standard socialising within a methodical existence.

Asked to cat sit for her health retreat holidaying sister, Cathy meets the neighbours beginning with hyper Gemma Jean (Christine Woods) her son and his estranged father. All three individually create a series of unexpected life changing incidents including falling prey to a confused, teenage boy.

These unsolicited emotional games help Cathy the hard way, to re-evaluate her own family affinity.

Making friends with this weird family could have been the end of it all for Cathy, however her symmetrical life being turned upside down proves to be invigorating in more ways than one.

In what could be described as an anti-date movie, achingly funny as it is painful, always entertaining, compulsive viewing from Director, Debra Eisenstadt, while her eye-opening lead Wendi McLendon-Covey, crackles.
