Veteran Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki‘s award winning Fallen Leaves will be in UK cinemas soon. MUBI today release the film’s UK Trailer, bittersweet and deadpan.
The film stars Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen, which has been inspired by the song Les feuilles mortes (Dead Leaves) Joseph Kosma with lyrics by Jacques Prévert. Set in Helsinki, Pöysti and Vatanen are both lonely who have jumped those hurdles for love. Now the pair’s souls meet at a local karaoke bar will love cherish?
After the early film festival success could that success continue into the major awards? Who knows, it is going to be Finland’s entry to next year’s Oscars…

Set in modern day Helsinki, Fallen Leaves tells the story of Ansa (Alma Pöysti) and Holappa (Jussi Vatanen), two lonely souls whose chance meeting at a local karaoke bar is beset by numerous hurdles. From lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism and a charming stray dog, the pair’s path to happiness is as bittersweet as it is ultimately delightful.
Shot through with Kaurismäki’s typically playful, idiosyncratic style and deadpan sense of humor, this tender romantic tragicomedy is both a loving tribute to the filmmaker’s beloved contemporaries and a timely reminder of the potency of movie-going from one of cinema’s living legends.
The rest of the main cast includes Janne Hyytiäinen, Nuppu Koivu, and Matti Onnismaa.Fallen Leaves will be released in UK and Irish cinemas from 1st December. A launch date for the film on MUBI has still to be announced, expect 2024.
