2023 has been a great year for Irish actor Paul Mescal with the awards and nominations from Aftersun. Life must go on and Carmen is his next jig, Dazzler Media have released the UK Trailer, fancy a dance?
The film marks the directorial feature debut for Benjamin Millepied who is also a renowned dancer and choreographer. Starring along side Mescal is Melissa Barrera (Scream VI, In The Heights) and this film is a modern retelling of the classic opera Carmen (or Carmen From Malta). Mescal and Barrera are a couple on the run from a Mexican drug Cartel.
This looks a little gritty, visually gorgeous even dreamlike and features an original score by Nicholas Britell. What do you think?
Carmen, a young and fiercely independent woman, is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert following the brutal murder of her mother. After surviving a terrifying and dangerous illegal border crossing into the U.S., she is captured by a fierce border patrol agent, but saved by his partner, Aidan, who helps Carmen escape. They make their way north toward Los Angeles in search of her mother’s best friend and the owner of La Sombra nightclub, a sanctuary of music and dance. But while the pair find solace and love for each other in this magical refuge, time is running out as the police hunt closes in.
Melissa Barrera (In the Heights) and Academy Award-nominee Paul Mescal (Aftersun) are dazzling in Benjamin Millepied’s critically acclaimed, modern-day retelling of one of history’s most famous love stories and operas, featuring a majestic new music score by Nicholas Britell.
Carmen also stars Rossy de Palma, Elsa Pataky, Nicole da Silva, Tara Morice, Benedict Hardie, Richard Brancatisano, and Kaan Guldur. You can watch the film in select UK and Irish cinemas from 2nd June.
