It was the first Pakistani film to win at Cannes Film Festival and now Saim Sadiq‘s Joyland is heading to UK Cinemas next month. Studio Soho have now released the official UK Trailer in a film which patriarchy and forbidden love clash.
The film has sadly bagged a lot of controversary in homeland as it’s a story man falling in love with a transgender woman. The film originally got a limited cinema release in Pakistan after a ban back in November. On the positive side, the film garnered numerous awards and honours as well as being shortlisted for the Oscars, representing Pakistan.
The film tells the story of a man encouraged by his patriarchal family to continue the family line. However he secretly joins an erotic dance company and falls in love with a trans woman.
The feature follows a patriarchal family as they yearn for the birth of a baby boy to continue the family line, while their youngest son secretly joins an erotic dance theatre and falls for an ambitious trans starlet. Their impossible love story begins to illuminate the entire family’s desire for a sexual rebellion.
The film stars Ali Junejo, Alina Khan, Rasti Farooq, Sarwat Gilani, Sohail Sameer, Salman Peerzada, and Sania Saeed.
Joyland will be released in UK and Irish cinemas from 24th February.
