Boutique streaming service and distributor MUBI have sent us the searing trailer for Lorenzo Vigas drama The Box.
Just like we’ve mentioned before MUBI once again pick a selection of the critically acclaimed films from the festivals. The festival season maybe ending the streaming service bring us what looks will be Venezuela’s entry to 2023 Oscars.
The film is a tense coming of age drama of a young teen who lives in Mexico City with his grandmother. He learns that his later father’s remains have been found, he now heads to collect them. Only to meet a man who looks like his father making him question who he really is.
Written and directed by Lorenzo Vigas (From Afar, The Orchid Seller), the film received its World Premiere at the 2021 Venice Film Festival and has been selected as Venezuela’s official Oscar® submission for Best International Feature Film.
Hatzin (Hatzin Navarrete), a young teenager from Mexico City, travels to collect the remains of his father, which have been found in a communal grave in the northern part of Mexico. But a casual encounter with a man Mario (Hernán Mendoza) who shares a physical resemblance with his father puts in doubt the certainty of his father’s death and above all, opens the possibility of re-establishing a father-son relationship the young man so deeply desires.
Winner of the Venice Film Festival’s Leoncino d’Oro Agiscuola Award – Cinema for UNICEF, The Box concludes Venezuelan writer-director Lorenzo Vigas trilogy, which includes his short Elephants Never Forget (2004) and his feature debut, From Afar (Festival 2016), winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
The film stars tars Elián Gonzalez, Hatzín Navarrete, Hernán Mendoza and Cristina Zulueta. The Box will be exclusively released on MUBI in UK as well as Ireland from 11th November.
