After months of hearing great things about the film, Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale has a UK and Irish release date.
A24 bought the U.S rights to the film, no word on who will release the film here. The boutique distributor continue their releases in the UK confirming the film is set for a February release next year.
Since it’s world premiere at Venice Film Festival we have been hearing great things. The psychological drama picked up several awards and considered a ‘comeback’ for Brendan Fraser. The long standing Ovations at several screenings increased the buzz to see this for many. However the film did come with controversary with criticism of the fat suit Fraser wore to play the role.
The film is adapted from a Samuel D Hunter play of the same name. Fraser plays a reclusive English Teacher who is also morbidly obese. Charlie (Fraser) is trying to reconnect with his daughter (Sink) whilst battling with his own personal demons. He originally abandoned his family after coming out gay and living a new life with his boyfriend. Thanks to grief Charlie took to food to cope bringing even more problems.
We haven’t seen this film, those who have call it his best performance in a very long time. The actor himself was in tears at the Venice premiere, could he now be tearful again winning a Oscar?

Along side Fraser, the cast includes Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton.
The Whale will be released in UK and Irish Cinemas from 3rd February 2023. If you live in the U.S you will can watch the film in select cinemas from 9th December.
