Every year Sundance Film Festival has unearthed some great horror films. You don’t need myself to name them all, this year’s festival one of those highlights was Nikyatu Jusu‘s Nanny. Tonight Amazon have released the psychological horror thriller trailer for the Grand Jury Prize winning chiller.

[Update1st September] today the BFI have announced their 2022 London Festival line-up and Nanny is part of the festival. You can watch the film 7th and 8th October [book tickets].

The film stars Anna Diop as Aisha who has just emigrated to USA. She has been hired by an Affluent couple (Michelle Monaghan and Morgan Spector) in their New York Apartment. It is hoped this job will help Aisha bring her son from Senegal over to live with her. That dream is scuppered by a violent presence that invades her dreams and reality.

We do enjoy these horrors that play on your mind rather than jump scares. This film garnered some fantastic reviews at Sundance, it visually looks great and sounds very creepy. The horror looks low key and at times reminds us a little bit like Remi Weekes His House. Especially when it comes to the emigration experience…

In this psychological fable of horror, Aisha (Anna Diop), a woman who recently emigrated from Senegal, is hired to care for the daughter of an affluent couple (Michelle Monaghan and Morgan Spector) living in New York City. Haunted by the absence of the young son she left behind, Aisha hopes her new job will afford her the chance to bring him to the U.S., but becomes increasingly unsettled by the family’s volatile home life. As his arrival approaches, a violent presence begins to invade both her dreams and her reality, threatening the American dream she is painstakingly piecing together.

This one also stars Sinqua Walls, Morgan Spector, Rose Decker, and Leslie Uggams. Nanny will be released on Prime Video from 16th December.
