Christina Ricci Joining Tim Burton’s Wednesday Spin-off?

The Addams Family star returning but not as Wednesday!

We’ve known for just over a year Tim Burton is set to direct the new The Addams Family spin-off series Wednesday. Late last night news broke Christina Ricci is set to star in the series, but not as our titular character.

Ricci is probably the actress most commonly connected to the character. In 1991 she played Wednesday Addams and again in 1993 in the film’s sequel. That role will go to Jenna Ortega (X, Scream), which may disappoint fans of the franchise who were expecting her to play a ‘older Wednesday’.

Deadline broke the news and in their report they say the actress will play a ‘new character’. What that character she is to play is still under wraps to keep fans in suspense . Netflix themselves confirmed the news through their Twitter account They tweeted – “Yes, it’s true – the magnificent Christina Ricci is joining the cast of the new Wednesday Addams series as an exciting new character *snap snap*.”

It’s believed Ricci has been working quietly on the production  for the past few weeks. Thora Birch recently left the project and potentially she has took over her. There is no confirmation this is the case, what the report does say the characters are ‘similar’.

Ricci will join Ortega along side Catherine Zeta-Jones as matriarch Morticia Addams and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams.

The show comes from Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar with Tim Burton directing. The coming of age comedy with Ortega as Wednesday Addams with a focus on her years at Nevermore Academy. A live action show described as a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery.

The series will also star Riki Lindhome as Dr. Valerie Kinbott, and Gwendoline Christie featuring as Nevermore principal as well as Morticia’s longtime rival Larissa Weems.

Filming of the series is to wrap up in Romania later this month. Netflix have not announced a potential release date just yet.
