A24 Films have just released the U.S Trailer for Sean Baker’s upcoming comedy drama Red Rocket. Taking us into the world of drugs, pimps and a washed up porn star who returns to his home town.

Baker will always be known for his films Starlet, Tangerine, and The Florida Project. Films that all portray the realism of struggling lives of working class people. His latest does have many of those elements with a big slice of dark comedy.

Simon Rex stars as Mickey who is a washed up porn star who heads back to his small Texan home town. He does have a reputation of the women he’s dated he’s coaxed them into the Adult industry. His latest target is a young woman in his hometown however that visit isn’t turning out to be one he’s not welcomed.

The film premiered originally at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The reviews have been strong. Could we say this has similar parallels with Uncut Gems? Rex certainly looks like he’s loving playing the sycophantic character.

After Tangerine (LFF 2015) and The Florida Project (LFF 2017), Sean Baker summons another tragicomic story from life in the margins. Simon Rex stars as Mikey, once a successful porn star in Los Angeles, now banging on the door of his ex-wife Lexi (Bree Elrod) in the poor industrial suburb where she lives with her mother. Mikey soon falls back on his old ways, dealing weed for a buck, but his curiosity is piqued by a pretty redhead Strawberry (Suzanna Son), who works in a doughnut shop. Mikey has his eye on Strawberry and excitedly makes plans for her to join him in his big adult movie comeback after her 18th birthday. But can smalltown dreams come true, or is Mikey just a loser living in the past? (Universal Pictures Synopsis)

The film also stars Suzanna Son, Bree Elrod, Brenda Deiss, Ethan Darbone, Brittney Rodriguez, and Judy Hill.

A24 are releasing Red Rocket in the U.S 3rd December. Universal Pictures will be releasing the film in the UK and Ireland, date still to be announced. The film will make it’s UK Premiere at BFI London Film Festival on Thursday 7th October [Buy Tickets].
