Mark Rylance Is A ‘Dreamer’ In Phantom Of The Open Trailer

Don’t let any hurdles get in your way, Mark Rylance is a ‘dreamer’ as he heads for the stars in the Official UK Trailer for Craig Roberts Phantom Of The Open.

actor come filmmaker Roberts after success with Eternal Beauty now returning behind the camera for a golfing true story comedy. formerly called Meet The Flitcrofts, the heart-warming true story of Maurice Flitcroft, who entered the 1976 British Open, despite never playing a round of golf before.

With Rylance as Maurice you can’t go, a true professional, a stage actor showcasing he’s just as fantastic in front of a camera as much as a live audience. Maurice Flitcroft like Eddie The Eagle Edwards was voted the worst in their perspective sports. Both men true champions to their families and champion the fun element which regularly gets forgotten about in competitive sports.

This looks a fun, upbeat film, like Happy Gilmore with a better actor in lead role…

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN tells the remarkable true story of Maurice Flitcroft, a crane operator and optimistic dreamer from Barrow-in-Furness who, with the support of his family and friends, managed to gain entry to the 1976 British Open qualifying, despite never playing a round of golf before. With pluckiness and unwavering self-belief, Maurice pulls off a series of stunning, hilarious and heartwarming attempts to compete at the highest level of professional golf, drawing the ire of the golfing elite but becoming a British folk hero in the process.

The film also stars Sally Hawkins as his wife Jean and  Rhys Ifans as  Maurice nemesis Mackenzie. They are joined by Mark Lewis Jones, Johann Myers, Jake Davies, and Barry Aird.

Phantom Of The Open will get it’s world premiere first on 12th October at BFI London Film Festival. eOne UK have yet to confirm an UK or Irish cinema release date apart from it will be out before end of 2021.
