A gripping and glorious story of friendship and petty crime in the Old West, are the makings of Kelly Reichardt‘s gloriously unique First Cow. Just over a week ago we got a look at the film’s UK Trailer from MUBI who are brining the film to UK Cinemas. Today we get a second shorter new Trailer as we learn about the film’s premiere on MUBI.
Set in the Pacific Northwest, early nineteenth century we follow a loner (John Magaro) and King Lu(Orion Lee). The pair attempt live their the best they can but not always by illegal means.
An unlikely friendship as two men attempt to survive and step on the yellow brick road of the American Dream…
A taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaro) has travelled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although its longevity is reliant upon the clandestine participation of a nearby wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow. From this simple premise Reichardt constructs an interrogation of foundational Americana that recalls her earlier triumph Old Joy in its sensitive depiction of male friendship, yet is driven by a mounting suspense all its own.
The film cast also includes John Magaro, Orion Lee, Alia Shawkat, John Magaro, Dylan Smith, Toby Jones, and Ewan Bremner.
First Cow will first be released in UK Cinemas in a few weeks from 28th May. After this the film will head exclusively to MUBI who will stream the film from 9th July.
