When it comes to female voices in Jazz, Billie Holiday is considered one of the best if not the greatest by some. Lee Daniels The United States vs. Billie Holiday will showcase the rise of the legendary Jazz musician. Tonight eOne have released release the film’s UK Trailer ahead of it’s release this year, and that rise was not a smooth transition. It was complicated.

Like many new films, this film has seen the film delayed or even change format or distributors. In the U.S it was originally Paramount Pictures for a cinema release, now on Hulu streaming service and here in the UK eOne.

Andra Day plays young Billie Holliday during the 1940’s, adored worldwide but deliberately targeted the federal government. They wanted to ban her music as they saw it inspiring the civil rights movement especially the song ‘Strange fruit’. A trailer blazer, a woman considered the godmother of the American Civil Rights movement.

She broke many barriers, next to delivering some great music to inspire everyone. Here’s hoping she gets the film she deserves.

The legendary Billie Holiday, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, spent much of her career being adored by fans across the globe. Beginning in the 1940’s in New York City, the federal government targeted Holiday in a growing effort to escalate and racialize the war on drugs, ultimately aiming to stop her from singing her controversial and heart-wrenching ballad, “Strange Fruit.” Led by Oscar® nominated director Lee Daniels and introducing Grammy® nominated singer-songwriter Andra Day, The United States vs. Billie Holiday unapologetically presents the icon’s complicated, irrepressible life. Screenplay writer Suzan-Lori Parks, the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, pens this intimate tale of a fierce trailblazer whose defiance through music helped usher in the civil rights movement.

The film also stars Trevante Rhodes, Natasha Lyonne, Garrett Hedlund, Miss Lawrence, Rob Morgan, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Tyler James Williams, Erik LaRay Harvey and Tone Bell.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday doesn’t have a UK or Irish release date just yet. If you live in the USA it’s 26th February on Hulu.
