Watch The Trailer For Japan’s Oscar Entry True Mothers

Awards season is upon us and one of us and the big awards hitters come out to play. After the success of Parasite at last year’s Oscars there’s hope a World cinema film could win the main Oscar as well as the best foreign film category. Japan’s Oscar entry will be Naomi Kawase‘s True Mothers (Asa ga Kuru) and The Playlist have gotten their hands on an exclusive look at the U.S Trailer.

The film was part of the Official Selection for 2020 Cannes Film Festival, making it’s world premiere at Toronto. The film looks like will pull at your heart strings in all directions, as the film follows a couple unsuccessfully attempt to get pregnant. A young pregnant girl offers hope by offering the couple her unborn son for adoption. Years later a young woman returns saying she is the boy’s mother.

TRUE MOTHERS represents the first time that talented Caméra d’Or-winning director Naomi Kawase has represented her country on the Oscar stage (and only the third time from 67 submissions that Japan has been represented by a woman, after Yong-hi Yang for Our Homeland in 2013 and Mipo O for The Light Only Shines There in 2015). After a long and unsuccessful struggle to get pregnant, Satoko (Hiromi Nagasaku) and her husband, Kiyokazu (Arata Iura), decide to adopt a baby boy. A few years later, their family is shaken by Hikari (Aju Makita), a young woman, who claims to be the child’s biological mother. Satoko decides to confront Hikari directly in TRUE MOTHERS, a universally acclaimed official selection at Cannes and the Toronto International Film Festival, nominated for a Golden Seashell and Gold Hugo at the San Sebastian and Chicago International Film Festivals, respectively.

The film stars Arata Iura, Hiromi Nagasaku, Aju Makita, Miyoko Asada, Taketo Tanaka, and Ren Komai.

There’s no word on when True Mothers (Asa ga Kuru) or who will be releasing the film in the UK and Ireland. The film will be getting a virtual Cinema release in the USA 29th January.
