We all have dreams, some people get those dreams hand to them on a plate. In Netflix‘s The White Tiger, you have to create your own fate. The streaming giants have a released a second but full Trailer for Ramin Bahrani‘s film of empowerment , in the words of the classic Queen song, ‘I Want To Break Free‘.
A rags to riches tale, set in India. A story of an impoverish drive, who unearths a plan to break free from his servitude. His cunning plan pushes him to the top, however opens his eyes to the corruption determined to prevent him rising above his wealthy master.
Sad to say the class struggle is even more resonant nowadays than it’s ever been. Even here in the UK but for decades in even more in India and it’s getting worse. India is considered a ‘Third World’ country and opened to corruption and abuse. Aravind Adiga’s book of the same name is considered a ‘authentic voice of the Third World, like you’ve never heard it before’ and I like that very much here’s hoping the film can do likewise.
Balram Halwai (Adarsh Gourav) narrates his epic and darkly humorous rise from poor villager to successful entrepreneur in modern India. Cunning and ambitious, our young hero jockeys his way into becoming a driver for Ashok (Rajkummar Rao) and Pinky (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), who have just returned from America. Society has trained Balram to be one thing – a servant – so he makes himself indispensable to his rich masters. But after a night of betrayal, he realizes the corrupt lengths they will go to trap him and save themselves. On the verge of losing everything, Balram rebels against a rigged and unequal system to rise up and become a new kind of master. Based on the New York Times bestseller and 2008 Man Booker Prize-winning novel.
The film stars Adarsh Gourav, Rajkummar Rao, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
The White Tiger will be in select UK cinemas and on Netflix globally from 22nd January 2021.
