Actress Dame Diana Rigg star of stage and screen has sadly died at the age of 82. The much loved and respected actress passed away after a short battle with cancer.
Dame Rigg’s daughter actress Rachael Stirling, confirmed the death of her mother who diagnosed with cancer in March this year. “She spent her last months joyfully reflecting on her extraordinary life, full of love, laughter and a deep pride in her profession,”
Her agent, Simon Beresford released a statement of her death “It is with tremendous sadness that we announce that Dame Diana Rigg died peacefully early this morning.
- “She was at home with her family who have asked for privacy at this difficult time. Dame Diana was an icon of theatre, film, and television.
She was the recipient of Bafta, Emmy, Tony and Evening Standard Awards for her work on stage and screen.
Dame Diana was a much loved and admired member of her profession, a force of nature who loved her work and her fellow actors. She will be greatly missed.”
To a generation pf cult television fans, she’ll always be known for her role as Emma Peel in Avengers. The role made her a household name as the secret agent Peel, a staple diet of television during the 1960’s . She would play Peel in 51 episodes including successfully fighting for better wages. After leaving show she went Stateside hosting her own sitcom Diana in the early 1970’s. 20 plus years later she would play Mrs Danvers in the 1997 TV adaptation of Rebecca.
Did you know James Bond had a wife? She would play one woman to married Her Majesty’s greatest ever agent, playing Teresa ‘Tracy’ Draco in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. George Lazenby was the film’s Bond wrote a touching message via his Instagram page..“She undoubtedly raised my acting game when we made On Her Majesty’s Secret Service together in 1968-9. I remember the press conference at the Dorchester in London, knowing she was going to play my wife. We had fun together on the set of the movie in Switzerland and Portugal. Her depth of experience really helped me. We were good friends on set. Much was made of our supposed differences but that was the Press looking for a news story. I was sorry to have lost my wife in the film at the end. The death of Contessa Teresa di Vincenzo Draco created a memorable cinema moment over 50 years ago. As my new bride, Tracy Bond, I wept for her loss. Now, upon hearing of Dame Diana’s death, I weep again. My deepest condolences for her family. Love George xx”
Diana would play various other roles on TV, Film and on stage, for younger people, she will be known for her part in The Game Of Thrones. She played fan favourite Olenna Tyrell over 6 seasons and acid tongue that could scare a dragon.
Diana Rigg’s final film role will be in Edgar Wright‘s upcoming horror Last Night In Soho, coming out in 2021.
