Watch UK Trailer For Summerland Starring Gemma Arterton

31st July is fast becoming a significant day for UK cinefiles, with many new cinema releases arriving. One of those films is Period drama Summerland starring Gemma Arterton and today Lionsgate Films release the UK Trailer.

Love, magic, hope Arterton plays reclusive writer Alice who keeps herself to herself in a clifftop study. She loves to debunk myths via science, her work leaving her very lonely. Haunted by a love affair from her past Alice decides to take a young spirited boy (Lucas Bond) from London evacuated thanks to the blitz helps Alice to heal her wounds. Could it lead to a second chance to prove magic does exist.

Originally this film was to close this year’s BFI Flare Film Festival but cancelled due to Covid-19. The film was being set up for a VOD release, but now cinemas are slowly re-opening Lionsgate have taken the plunge to give the film a cinematic release.

This film marks the director feature debut for playwright Jessica Swale. The film also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw whose just just starred on stage in Nell Gwynn written by Swale, ironically about to be replaced by Arterton!

Summerland follows the story of fiercely independent folklore investigator, Alice (Gemma Arterton) who secludes herself in her clifftop study, debunking myths using science to disprove the existence of magic. Consumed by her work, but also profoundly lonely, she is haunted by a love affair from her past.

When spirited young Frank (Lucas Bond), an evacuee from the London Blitz, is dumped into her irritable care, his innocence and curiosity awaken Alice’s deeply buried emotions. Bravely embracing life’s miraculous unpredictability, Alice learns that wounds may be healed, second chances do occur, and that, just perhaps – magic really does exist.

The film also stars Tom Courtenay, Penelope Wilton, Lucas Bond and Dixie Egerickx.

Summerland will arrive in UK and Irish Cinemas from 31st July.
