When it comes to animation and feature length films, they always seem to get written off as ‘cartoons for kids’. As you know at The Peoples Movies and our readers know, animation is for everyone. We like to draw your attention to this gorgeous animation heading to UK and Irish Cinemas, ‘Away‘.
The film is the full-length feature debut for Gints Zilbalodis and his Dream Well studio. This is a film to site back and admire the art that will play on your screen. A dialogue free film that brimming with atmosphere of a boy and his motorcycle. In ‘Away‘ the boy rides across the island attempting to flee a dark spirit that pursues him. On his way he starts to connect with nature and the animals, is it a dream? Reality?
Zilbalodis drew inspiration from films, games and books when creating Away.From the works of Haruki Murakami and Hayao Miyazaki,(Red Turtle another example).And the classic films ranging from Bicycle Thieves and The General through to 2004 feature, Motorcycle Diaries and the more recent 2014 feature, It Follows. Musical influences for Zilbalodis, who also composed and recorded the film’s score, include Sigur Rós and Max Richter.

AWAY is about a boy travelling across an island on a motorcycle, trying to escape a dark spirit and get back home. Along the way he makes a series of connections with diﬀerent animals and reﬂects on the possible ways he ended up on the island. Part dream, part reality, AWAY explores our common, universal need to ﬁnd a connection.
