The American filmmaker is working on his first animated TV series since Clerks. The programme will be released on digital platforms.
“The King of the geeks” Kevin Smith, the well-known creator of obscene and incorrect comedies, such as Clerks or Dogma, proudly announced this week that his next project will be rather kids friendly. The filmmaker is currently developing an animated TV series (his first since 2001!) that is based on the popular Green Hornet franchise. Smith will co-operate on the programme with WildBrain, a family-focused production company (Inspector Gadget, Teletubbies) and is planning to sell it to the streaming services. The premiere of the series and precise nature of Kevin’s involvement in it (is he just a producer, or a writer and director as well?) is unknown at the moment.
Interestingly, Smith was associated with the Green Hornet project before. Few years back, he wrote a script for never released live-action movie that was planned by Miramax (Kevin later published his work as a comic book instead). Let’s just hope that this time he will bring his unique version of the established story to the screen. “Thankful to join another epic animated series! And in the déjà vu department, I will once again cross paths with the flamboyant underworld figure known as THE GREEN HORNET and his partner in ‘crime’, KATO! Thanks to the folks at WildBrain for letting me drive the Black Beauty!” stated the filmmaker on his Twitter.
The Green Hornet is one of the oldest superheroes ever created. The masked crime-fighter made his debut as early as in the 1930s (even before Superman) in the adventure radio show crafted by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker. The character however became famous 30 years later thanks to the popular TV series called simply The Green Hornet (and which starred the legendary Hong Kong actor and martial artist Bruce Lee as Hornet’s sidekick Kato). The story also served as an inspiration for the Michel Gondry’s 2011 action comedy The Green Hornet with Seth Rogen in the lead role.
Kevin Smith shared with his fans that his latest adaptation will in fact bring a completely new storyline that will focus on the grown son of the original Green Hornet, who is going to battle crime together with the daughter of the original Kato. The series will of course feature the Hornet’s hi-tech car, the Black Beauty, as well. Sounds as a pretty promising fun to me.
