Taika Waititi Set To Direct Next Star Wars Film

May the 4th Be With you all! Since Disney made this day Star Wars day every year today they have confirmed the director for the next film…Taika Waititi!

Fresh from directing the final episode of Disney+ The Mandalorian, Disney/Lucasfilm confirmed the Kiwi actor filmmaker will be their new director.

The Award winning filmmaker won an Oscar for World War Two  drama JoJo Rabbit. He’s also responsible for rejuvenating the Thor franchise with Thor: Ragnarok. As mentioned he’s no stranger to that galaxy far far away.

Obviously what direction, idea he will be working on have not been announced. What has been confirmed what ever story it will get, it will be from the pen of Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The Oscar nominated Scottish writer penned 1917.

With the current Corona Virus pandemic lockdown, it’s also difficult to actually give this project a time frame. Not just in what potential release date, but when could they start production. From what we do know is Disney has blocked out December 2022, 2024 and 2026 for new Star Wars films. Could Takia Waititi be directing what looks the next trilogy?

It’s exciting times for Star Wars fans and today’s news will excite them especially if they have enjoyed his previous work. News of Waititi potentially directing a Star Wars film has been around from early 2020. It makes you wonder if his appointment may have been made at the start of the year. Today all parties making it official one Star Wars special day, May 4th!

Takia Waititi’s schedule is packed. His next film the football flick Next Goal Wins is currently in post production, there is also 2 Roald Dahl films for Netflix. Marvel fans will be eager for Thor: Love And Thunder not forgetting the Time Bandits TV Show.

Staying with Disney+, Disney and LucasFilm also confirmed that Russian Doll co-creator, Leslye Headland will serve as showrunner on another Star Wars galaxy series. They never named what that series will be, but there’s shows on Obi-Wan Kenobi and Cassian Andor, on the cards.
