Pain was their pleasure now they might be our viewing pleasure, as Hellraiser is coming to Television. It was only a couple of weeks ago we reported David Bruckner (The Ritual) is set to direct a film reboot. It now seems HBO are set to bring Pinhead and his cenobites to the small screen.
Deadline are reporting there will be a TV show based on the Hellraiser mythology. They also state Halloween reboot director David Gordon Green is been set up to direct. They hope he will direct the pilot episode as well as potential episodes later in the series.
The film will be also based around Clive Barker‘s 1987 Novella Hellbound Heart. The TV version idea has been around for a while with the story continuing or as an anthology series. Whatever option the Cenobites will return, along with more demonic unmentionables the box can unearth. Now wouldn’t you like to know how the Pinhead’s minions became the cenobites? Yes Please!
Next to David Gordon Green onboard, the main force behind this project will be Michael Dougherty and Mark Verheiden. Dougherty we’re really stoked about as he was one of the minds behind the underrated Trick R’ Treat and Krampus. He did also direct the disappointing Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, Verheiden worked on Heroes and Battlestar Galactica reboot.
If Dougherty has shown he has the potential to expand and continue the Hellraiser world. His horror credentials are more highly regarded than his big film experience. After 9 or 10 Hellraiser films it’s a sensible idea to expand the world not a TV show challenging a film reboot. This will give the Cenobites centre stage instead of the backseat they took in the original 1987 film.
Here in the UK we don’t really have HBO channel, so we will have to wait until closer to release to find out what channel will show this. The Hellraiser TV Series will also have Roy Lee (iT), Dan and Andrew Farah (Ready Player One), Danny McBride (Halloween) will also be joining the project.
