This news doesn’t come to us with much surprise. Today Disney gave some update on there slate and Artemis Fowl is heading directly to Disney+.
After a couple of years of delays for various reasons, we wondered if Kenneth Brannagh‘s fantasy would ever be released. Despite the $100 million budget Disney have cut their loses, moving to the sensible Streaming option.
There has been been sadly a lack of interest in the film. Probably thanks to the delays before the Coronavirus but also other reasons. One been many critics believing Artemis was going to fall into the trap A Wrinkle In Time did.
The film was originally set for a August 2019, release before settling for 29th May. With the cinemas closed and probably still be closed by the end of next month, there was only one option.
Ricky Strauss, President, Content & Marketing, Disney+ made this statement: “With audiences largely unable to attend theatres in the current environment, we are thrilled to offer the premiere of ‘Artemis Fowl’ on Disney+. Director Kenneth Branagh and his spectacular cast take viewers right into the vibrant, fantasy world of the beloved book, which fans have been waiting to see brought to life onscreen for years. It’s great family entertainment that is the perfect addition to Disney+’s summer lineup.”
Based on the first book of Eoin Colfer‘s best-selling series of the same name, and directed by Kenneth Branagh. The story of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl finds himself in a battle of strength and cunning against a powerful, hidden race of fairies who may be behind his father’s disappearance.
With Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking up most of Disney cinematic slate. Moving Non MCU films like Artemis Fowl is a logical move to Disney +. The exact launch date is still not confirmed, but expect the film to be launched sometime in the Summer.
