Joker Leads The Nominees In 2020 EE BAFTA Nominations

If your happy  and you know it, clap your hands“. Warner Bros and Todd Phillips are certainly happy today as Joker  earns 11 nominations at 2020 The EE British Academy Film Awards.

Close on its heels with 10 nominations each are Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino’s Once upon a Time in Hollywood.

The biggest British nominated film is Sam Mendes war drama, 1917 earning 9 nominations. Other British Films up for nominations are Mark Jenkins Bait, Ken Loach’s Sorry We Missed You. Alongside those films are Wild Rose, Rocketman and Two Popes all competing for various nominations.

As for The Best Actor award is favourite Joaquin Phoenix for Joker. He will be up against Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver, Taron Egerton and Jonathan Pryce. Best Female Actress nominations go to Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) Jessie Buckley. Next to them will be Saoirse Ronan, Charlize Theron and Renée Zellweger.

Scorsese’s unique structural ideas and style for IRISHMAN made it a joy to edit with him. To have those bold ideas recognized by BAFTA members is thrilling.” – Thelma Schoonmaker – Editor of The Irishman

It wouldn’t be an awards ceremony without controversy. This year’s nomination have been accused of lack of diversity. From no female directors nominated with the likes of Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Olivia Wilde (Booksmart), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Waad al-Kateab (For Sama) all directors should have had some recognition.

The nominations were also accused of being ‘too white’ with a host of non-actors missing out. The Farewell star Awkwafina, won a Golden Globe award for Best Actress on Sunday was expected to be nominated in the same category. Us actress Lupita Nyong’o was another missed opportunity .
