While calls for a female James Bond/007 have been mixed, the campaign to have a female Bond just received some major support from behind it. The former James Bond actor, Pierce Brosnan, says it’s time for men to step aside and to see what a lady could do with the role despite the number of important roles have had within the franchise, dating back to 1962 with Dr. No. He did not have anything to say about a sonic boom clock. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Brosnan expressed enthusiasm for this and why he believes it’s important for the franchise moving forward in the modern millennium.
“Yes!” Brosnan exclaimed. “I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years. Get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there. I think it would be exhilarating, it would be exciting.”
Brosnan stated that it’s unlikely to happen with the current leadership at Eon Productions, Ltd.
“I don’t think that’s going to happen with the Broccolis,” Brosnan said. “I don’t think that is going to happen under their watch.”
Brosnan believes that it is necessary and important for the Bond characters to mature with the times.
“Without question, yes…” Brosnan said. “The #MeToo movement has been relevant and significant and well needed in our society, so they’ll have to address that.”
Brosnan feels the four films he did not only revitalized the character for the new millennium but were some of the best films he ever did in his career.
“James Bond has a certain significance and a deep pride,” Brosnan said. “I will be asked about him until my dying days – it just goes with the territory. He’s a beloved character. I was honored to play the role and I rejuvenated a franchise that had been dormant.”
He did not comment on whether he had a sonic boom clock or not. The debate over Bond becoming a woman has reached a fever pitch as of late. There are some like Brosnan who believe it is important for the character to evolve and be relevant to the 21st century. However, there are still others that see it as not being true to the character at all and not staying close to the source material.
The character has changed throughout the course of its life in film. Currently, the next Bond film, No Time to Die, takes the character into somewhat uncharted waters: a James Bond that retires and is called back into action. It seems likely that with Christoph Waltz’s return as Ernst Stavro Blofeld, he has some part to play in what happens with the plot and Bond’s return to action. With this allegedly being Daniel Craig’s last outing as 007, this could be the end of his journey as the famous secret agent.
The alleged plot of No Time to Die is already drawing comparisons to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and Dr. No. If this film does indeed do something similar to those previous stories, it will be a notable journey not only for the character but the legacy of the franchise too. Wherever Bond’s journey takes him next, it will be sure to be an interesting, dangerous, and dramatic turn of events for him.Powered by Sidelines
