Roma And The Favourite Lead The Oscars 2019 Nominations

Some are calling it the most unpredictable  Awards season in a long long time. Today The Academy revealed the nominees for the 91st Academy Awards with Roma and The Favourite leading the line.

Yorgos LanthimosThe Favourite and Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma have both scored themselves 10 nominations each. Bradley Cooper‘s A Star Is Born and Adam McKay’s Vice have both scored highly too with 8 each. What will excite many critics is Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther has been nominated for 7 nominations. Becoming the first comic-book/superhero film nominated for Best Picture award.

To be honest there has been no surprises in the leading categories. Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book who surprised many in the award ceremonies that have passed have nominations too.

Since day one Olivia Colman has been ‘the favourite’ to win best actress award with A Star Is Born Lady Gaga her closest rival. However Glen Close has joined the battle for her role in The Wife and could surprise many.

What has shocked some is Bradley Cooper wasn’t nominated for Best Director, but Best Actor. A category just as strong with Christian Bale, Rami Malek, Viggo Mortensen, Willem Dafoe battling him for the Oscar.

In the supporting actor role Richard E.Grant has been nominated for Can You Ever Forgive Me? His first ever Oscar nomination. He will be up against Sam Elliott who was ignored in previous awards now been recognised.Best Female Supporting actor will be trickier with Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, Amy Adams, Regina King and Marina de Tavira. Could the first time Roma actress surprise them all?

What will disappoint some people, will be no Female directors have been nominated. The last time we have to go back to Kathryn Bigelow in 2010 for The Hurt Locker. Lynne Ramsay, (You Were Never Really Here), and Josie Rourke( Mary Queen Of Scots). Alongside Debra Granik (Leave No Trace) and Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) potentially all strong contenders.

After the debacle with Kevin Hart as the host, the Oscars will be without an host. The 91st annual Academy Awards air Sunday, February 24th or here in the UK & Ireland 25th February on Sky Movies.
