Denis Villeneuve‘s reworking of Frank Hebert‘s classic Sci-Fi Dune is seriously hotting up now. The past few weeks the cast has been rapidly expanding and in the last 24 hours we have learned 2 others are joining … Oscar Isaacs and Zendanya.
Starting with Star Wars actor Oscar Isaac who is set to play a big role as Duke Leto Atreides. The father of Paul Atreides our lead character (to be played by Timothée Chalamet). Variety are stating the actor is in final negotiations to play the role. His recent adventures in space for Star Wars should help steady the actor when he plays the Duke in the ‘Adult version of Star Wars‘ as Villeneuve once called it.
It seems all about the Paul Atreides connections as the other actor joining the cast is to be his potential love interest. The Greatest Showman actress Zendaya according to Collider will play his girl of his dreams Chani. She is a warrior tasked with protecting Paul on his journey. It would mean the pair wouldn’t meet face to face until part two, with Chani appearing in Paul’s dreams in the first part. The report does state her negotiations are nearing completion.
Dune is set in the distant future, and follows Paul Atreides, whose family assumes control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, jurisdiction over Arrakis is contested among competing noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship with nature, as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s reign.
I’ll admit I’ve only seen David Lynch’s 1984 troublesome film adaptation, I’ve also never read the book. however Villeneuve is an ambitious filmmaker and has promised his project won’t be a like for like. It will partly based on the novel but will include new material to expand the world and hopefully making the film into a franchise.
Oscar Isaac and Zendanya will be joining Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Paul Atreides’ mother. Charlotte Rampling is set to play the Reverend Mother Mohiam, with Stellan Skarsgård as the film’s antagonist, Baron Harkonnen. It’s expected Dave Bautista will play the Baron’s nefarious nephew Beast Rabban (originally played by Sting).
No release date has been discussed yet, however we can clearly say so far, Dune is one of the most anticipated films in a while.Powered by Sidelines
