I got into comic books in the late 1980s more into the 1990s. Spider-Man, and Batman were my favourites especially the caped crusader, I read every book, watch every show and film. Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight Films were heavenly, less said about Ben Affleck‘s reign. Back in 2017 we were stoked that Matt Reeves became the latest director to take The Batman forward. Not a lot has happened until now.
Since those two years since he took over from Ben Affleck as director, Reeves has been slowly working on his film. He wants to develop the right film, not rushing into things, even if it feels longer he’s been working on the project.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Reeves gave a small update on how things are going. In that interview he talks about the tone, the title and the potential villains the caped crusader may face…
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
As for the title, it seems Reeves hasn’t settled for an exact title…
“Right now it’s called The Batman. What it will be called ultimately, I don’t know.”
Like any other Superhero film, we love to know who our heroes will be facing and this one is no different. It seems The Batman will have more than one, who will play them, Reeves explains…
“There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”
So who will make up the Rogues Gallery? We don’t know at this stage, basically it could be any of Batman’s foes. The Penguin, Council Of Owls, Two Face, Mr Freeze, even Catwoman.
I’ve always wondered what really got me into Film Noir, I can assume it was the Batman comics I read. This version will hark back to detective skills rather than how badass he is in action. Will Ben Affleck return to play Bruce Wayne/Batman once again, we don’t know yet. It seems Matt Reeves maybe taking a little longer with a possible film to be released 2021.
