You wonder with all the already made films and ones on the way, there hasn’t been a Barbie yet. That is about to change as Warner Bros. and Mattel Films have confirmed there will be a live action film. They also have chosen their Barbie…Margot Robbie!
The film was originally been touted with Sony Pictures Entertainment with Amy Schumer been lined up. Due to a scheduling conflict, the comedic actress pulled out with rumours Anne Hathaway lined up to take over. That gossip was never officially confirmed.
The Mary Queen Of Scot‘s star will play the iconic toy doll with her production company LuckyChap Entertainment will produce the film. Produced alongside Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara.
The Australian actress made the following comment about the upcoming project…
“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I’m so honoured to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”
Toby Emmerich, the chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, commented: “This project is a great start to our partnership with Ynon and Mattel Films, And Margot is the ideal producer and actress to bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today’s audiences.”
We’ll next see Robbie play Queen Elizabeth in Mary Queen Of Scots released this Friday 11th January. After that, she will be playing Manson Film victim Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Robbie was one of the successes in Suicide Squad and is expected to play Harley Quinn in DC’s Birds Of Prey. Barbie isn’t expected to kick off until 2020.
