Blu-Ray Review – Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay

Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay [rating=3]

We all saw DC’s live-action adaptation of Suicide Squad and lets be real, it was about as bad as it gets. Underutilising some of the best characters in DC history and wasting a fantastic cast in what was one heck of a messy, poorly directed film. Who would have thought a straight-to-home media release could top a blockbuster? Sam Liu (Gotham by Gaslight, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract) returns to direct the film with a script from co-producer Alan Burnett (Justice League vs. Teen Titans).

In Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay, Amanda Waller’s top secret “Task Force X” – consisting of team leader Deadshot (voiced by Christian Slater), Harley Quinn, Killer Frost, Captain Boomerang, Bronze Tiger and Copperhead – are sent on a mission to find a mystical object so powerful, they’re willing to risk their own lives to steal it for themselves. Unfortunately for the team of misfits, Professor Zoom also has his eye on the prize so the race is well and truly on.

The film was pretty good itself, nothing much better than the previous DC animated films recently released but I found myself engaged for the duration. There’s plenty of good bloody action and dark comedy in this entry to merit it’s mature rating and should appeal to fans of the previous DC animated films as it subtly connects storylines already seen. It was great being able to see lesser known villains get their screen time in ‘Hell to Pay’ with Doctor Pyg, Blockbuster, Bronze Tiger and Banshee all making appearances in the film.

Overall Suicide Squad’s latest outing is an enjoyable eighty-six minute watch with good solid action sequences and humour, but would have scored higher had the animation quality been better.
